SSID exclusion list

The SSID exclusion list leaves the Wi-Fi networks you name out of your survey data. Use it to keep your home or office networks out of log files, streams, and public databases.

Opening the list

Settings > Map and lookups > SSID exclusion list, or
Signals > Wi-Fi, open the filter (Filter networks), then tap Manage excluded SSIDs at the bottom.

Adding an SSID

Tap Add an SSID.
In the Add to the exclusion list sheet, type the network name in Enter SSID.
Tap Exclude SSID.

Matching is exact and case sensitive: “MyNetwork” and “mynetwork” are different networks, and there are no wildcards. Spaces at the start and end of what you type are removed.

You can also exclude a network from its Wi-Fi details page (tap a network in the Wi-Fi list): the Survey data card shows “Included in survey data” with Exclude, or “Excluded from survey data” with Include.

The list holds up to 30 SSIDs. When it is full, the app says “Exclusion list is full (maximum 30 SSIDs)”.

Removing SSIDs

Tap the remove button next to an SSID and confirm Remove the excluded SSID? with Remove. The network is included in survey data again.
To empty the list, open More options and tap Clear all, then confirm Clear the exclusion list?.

What exclusion affects

An excluded network is dropped before the records reach any destination:

Not written to log files
Not sent to NS Analytics
Not streamed over MQTT or gRPC
Not saved for upload to OpenCelliD or BeaconDB
Not added to your survey points on the Map, and not counted in the Survey tab’s record counts

It is not hidden from you. Excluded networks still appear in the Wi-Fi list with an Excluded tag, on their details page, and in Wi-Fi spectrum.

With an NS Scout, probe requests for an excluded SSID and Wi-Fi clients of an access point heard using one are left out in the same way. Raw frames are the exception: they are saved as the Scout heard them, so the list can’t filter them.
